Here I begin to prove out how long it takes to go from ground-zero to gaining actionable insights from customer data, hoping to move my ‘there’s a price to pay not to play’ hypothesis about Big Data to theory.
Did you know there is a Catalogue of Catastrophe (CoC)? I did not know that before now but found it during my research and it is fascinating. It is a website devoted to tracking large troubled projects around the world.
Why do IT projects fail so often to meet our expectations, let alone exceed them? How many projects have you been involved with, IT or not, that did not achieve your intended target goals? Why is the popularity of IT in many organizations lower than that of congress?
It doesn’t take much these days to get big data. If your organization’s daily operations depend on mainstream technology such as relational databases of customers, vendors or transactions, documents, spreadsheets, email, social media, graphics files, mobile devices, web site statistics, sensor or security camera data, weather analytics, GPS data, log files or audio/video sources or streams of data, then you have big data. And it gets bigger every minute!
